Milou van den Bemd, MSc, PhD (candidate)

Milou van den Bemd

Radboud University (Netherlands)

Milou graduated cum laude in Sociology at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona, Spain) and Tilburg University (Tilburg, the Netherlands). Currently she is a PhD candidate residing in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. During her 4-year PhD trajectory of social-epidemiological nature she focuses on chronic diseases and chronic disease care in people with intellectual disabilities. Using different viewpoints, such as a literature review, quantitative studies with large nation-wide datasets, and qualitative interviews and focus groups, she elucidates gaps in the literature on chronic disease prevalence in people with intellectual disabilities and on the amount and nature of chronic disease care these people receive. Next to her PhD she is a writing coach for students, and is active in the PhD council. In all her activities her aim is to make impact: to help others with writing-related problems, to improve policy for PhD candidates, and to create awareness among primary care providers on chronically ill people with intellectual disabilities.
